The thrilling story is advanced by numerous quests the player undertakes in the most varied regions, among them a secret military base, the city of Prypiat that lends its name to the game, a factory site named Jupiter, as well as many other areas. groups and the mostly lethal anomalies in the environment encountered everywhere ensure a constant sense of menace. This impression is underscored by the finely detailed industrial ruins, reproduced here on the basis of aerial pictures and the developers' own photographs. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat skilfully combines first person shooter action with role-playing elements and is set in a realistic post-atomic scenario. In the role of Agent Alexander Degtyarev, who is dressed up as s.t.a.l.k.e.r., the player has to investigate the mysterious disappearance of five military helicopters and thereby stand one's ground against the various s.t.a.l.k.e.r. This so-called "Zone" is a highly contaminated area cordoned off by the military and now is combed through by the so-called s.t.a.l.k.e.r.s, modern fortune hunters, in search of unique artefacts. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat takes PC gamers once again into the vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986.
